Searca S.A, founded in 1992 and headquartered in Bogotá, is the largest air charter company in Colombia with a combined fleet of 30 jets and twin turbo-prop aircraft. Lead by Capt. Jorge Campillo, the company has deep roots in the country’s aerospace scene.
Well positioned to reintroduce the Twin Otter and share the Viking story with the Colombian market, Searca maintains its own air charter fleet in-house. This not only provides the company with an in-depth knowledge of operations and maintenance requirements, but also equips them with valuable real-time insight into Colombian operators’ needs and challenges.
Joining the Viking sales network in July, Searca sees the Twin Otter Series 400 as a strong addition to the Colombian aerospace scene. “It’s the kind of aircraft that we need in the Colombian market,” says Daniel Curbelo, Searca's Commercial Engineering Director.“ The jungle regions do not have prepared runways or fields. The Twin Otter performs in these conditions.”
Colombia knows Twin Otters. In the 1970’s Colombia had one of the largest Twin Otters fleets in the world and many legacy aircraft are still in operation. The Colombia Policía Nacional has two Twin Otters, which it uses to execute a variety of missions in complex terrain, from the rugged Andes to the dense Amazon. Paramount to mastering this diverse geography is the Twin Otter’s STOL capabilities. “The Twin Otter is the best aircraft in the market (in regards to STOL),” says Curbelo, “no other aircraft in the world can provide these features.”
Curbelo’s first focus will be working with the country’s law enforcement and military to refresh their fleets with the Series 400. “The police are in love with their aircraft (legacy Twin Otters).” The Series 400’s rugged and versatile build along with its amphibious capabilities are also likely to be attractive to this market given the country’s vast numbers of rivers - the Magdalena river system covers one fourth of the country - and the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
